- Navigate 3.1.3 Tools within the LMS Quest
Reflect for a moment on the LMS used for the quests in this skill. Then, list each tool available within the LMS in your blog. Which tools would be most valuable in the online classroom? Which would be of least value?
This entry seems closely related to Navigate 3.1.1, LMS Tool Categories. These tools are listed in that entry. In addition, there are:
Notification System
Instant Messaging
Blogs
Social Profiles
Calendar
Alert Systems
I believe that the GAVS version of the notification system is the News. This is where we post information that is relative to where the students are in the content and general announcements that need to be communicated to all students. We no lover use instant messaging, but I have often emailed students back and forth in real time. We do not specifically use blogs, but many teachers have their own blogs or websites. I use a website I created through Weebly. I provide additional explanations and resources for each module. I direct students to the resources through feedback and email. My site is found here: http://mcapchem.weebly.com/
We do not use social profiles. We have a new calendar tool available to us, but I have not used it since our students are all on different schedules. We do not have a specific alert system, but I am interested in this feature.
Of the tools available to us at GAVS, the most valuable tool is the content. This is where the student learns the material. Without this tool, there would be no course. The communication tools are also extremely important in order to assist the students with the content. This is what makes the difference in the type of courses we teach and self directed courses where there is no teacher to provide feedback. Right now, the least valuable tool is the discussion. I understand the need to promote communication among the students. I do think that discussions lead to this. They just don't lead to a significant portion of the actual learning of the material.
